The Bricks of Hope Project intends to rehabilitate (reconstruct/expand/repair) shelters of the neediest families amongst the refugees, the Special Hardship Cases (SHC Refugees) as termed by UNRWA, and other equally disadvantaged refugees living in structurally defective shelters across the West Bank. This is crucial to improving the hygiene, safety, and the overall living standards of these families.
The cost of this 12-month project is $1.5 Million and is considered to be one of the topmost priority projects of UNRWA in the West Bank (Note: this project was proposed to IRFANCanada by UNRWA). With this, the project will benefit a minimum of 70 familiesi across 17 refugee camps in the Hebron, Jerusalem, and Nablus regionsii.
The costs are as follows:
Reconstruction: Budget for average shelter is $16,000/each (for approximately 60 shelters)
Repair: Budget for average shelter was approximately $6,500/each (for approximately 10 shelters); however, with the decrease of the PSC and the greater budget, the number of shelters has increased to cover 18 shelters.
Other costs include: Program Support Costs (PSC) and Staffing, Running, and One time Equipping Costs.
iThe repair costs are set to the maximum cost possible, therefore, the actual costs will depend on the condition of the existing items, etc. With this, the cost of the project may cover up to 84 homes. The updated goal is to cover 78 homes instead of 70.
iiThis project covers homes in 17 of the 19 Refugee Camps across the West Bank, which include: Aida, Arroub, Azzeh, Dheisheh, and Fawwar in the Hebron Region; Amari, Aqabat Jaber, Deir Ammar, Ein El Sultan, Jalazon, and Kalandia in the Jerusalem Region; and Askar, Balata, Camp No1, Fara, Nurshams, and Tulkarem in the Nablus Region.
