Orphan Sponsorship
“By the end of 2003, there were an estimated 143 million orphans (ages 0-17) in 93 developing countries” (UNESCO)
One of the most tragic results of natural and man-made disasters is the separation of families. IRFAN-Canada makes a concerted effort to provide relief to children where one or both parents have been lost.
Article 25 (1) states “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”
By providing orphans with financial support, families are able to have access to things that we view as basic in Canada, including: clothing, medication, school supplies as well as education and much more. Orphan sponsorship is one of our major projects. Our orphan program has been tremendously successful and has given many families a chance to stay together. Sponsored children are integrated into mainstream activities with other children of their age and given the opportunity to develop.
Please see below for an outline of the basic things you need to know in order to be able to sponsor an orphan:
Just $60 a month can provide support to orphans to minimize their suffering and enrich their nurturing and developmental environment
Here is a list of possible items the money is spent on:
Money for the orphan's family for groceries or rent
School fees
Clothing and footwear
Books and stationary
Travel costs
A case worker (social worker) to ensure the orphan's well-being
You will receive an orphan’s profile with photos (photos of some orphans may not be available)
Throughout the sponsorship years, you are kept updated on the progress of the orphan’s life, including their academic achievements
As the orphan finishes high school, IRFAN-Canada provides the choice for them to either obtain vocational training that would help them gain autonomy and self-sustenance or continue their academic journey by connecting them with other support resources (the University Scholarship Program)
Your $60 a month donation can be paid by cheque, credit card, cash or automatic withdrawal. Only 5% is used in order to cover the cost of sending funds. The remaining $55.00 is used entirely for the orphans themselves.
